Indeed, it about AI.  The paperclip maximizer is a thought experiment by philosopher Nick Bostrom. A hypothetical ASI is given the goal of making paperclips.  Without proper constraints, it converts all available matter (including humans) into paperclips.  It's used to illustrate how even a seemingly trivial goal, pursued by a sufficiently powerful optimizer, could be catastrophic.
