when i tab-complete filenames in bash, it escapes spaces, '&' characters, etc. In emacs's minibuffer and dired, whitespace and the shell's reserved characters don't have meaning at all. Really all the linux kernel cares about is not having forward slashes in filenames. I like using spaces in filenames since it makes parsing elements of filename easy and I know it's never a character in usernames, post IDs, etc. Same isn't true of other commonly used separators like _ and -
